The Fruit Gardener's Guide - April
April brings showers and sunshine, and at times, a mixture of both. Sometimes April can be cold, or as in recent years, it can be quite warm. As the weather warms, bugs start to appear, so it is vital that pest control is undertaken.
April is the time to:
- Spray apples and pears to guard against aphids, apple blossom weevil and capsid bugs
- Thin out the fruits of outdoor peach and nectarine trees which are growing against the wall, but bear in mind that a 'natural' fruit drop will occur over the next few weeks
- Graft fruit trees as early as possible in the month
- Feed your fruit bushes and trees by applying sulphate of potash or a general fertiliser around their bases
