The Greenhouse Gardener's Diary - August
The greenhouse needs to watched during the month of August, as this is the time when foliage can be scorched by the hot summer sun.
August is the time to:
Take cuttings of:
- Fucshias
- Flowering and foliage pot plants
Pot On:
Plant:
- Narcissus bulbs
- Roman hyacinths
Harvest:
- Any ripe tomatoes on a regular basis
- Cucumbers
- Melons
- Grapes
Things to do:
- Guard against the scorching August sunshine by lining the greenhouse windows with paper
- Water and dampen down regularly, although begonias and gloximas need less watering after they haver finished flowering
- Continue to feed tomato plants with a liquid tomato fertilizer
- Begin to water cyclamen corms to start them growing. Scratch away the top surface of the potted soil, and replenish with John Innes potting compost No 1
- Top dress cucumber and melon patches with fresh compost
- Stop waterings melons as soon as the fruits start to ripen
- Ventilate the greenhouse well
