Birds are a welcome visitor to the garden, not only do they look beautiful, but they also keep down the aphids on your plants. If you want to attract garden birds, try to tempt them with food and water during the winter months, as this is the time when they need a little extra help with feeding. A nut dispenser is an ideal gadget to feed birds, as you can easily see if it needs refilling.

Squirrels can sometimes be a problem when you are trying to feed wild birds. If you do notice any signs of squirrel damage, invest in a squirrel proof nut dispenser, the birds can still feed easily, while the squirrels are left to their own devices.
Fat balls which contain sunflowers seeds and grains can also be hung from high branches. Don't forget that birds also like a supply of fresh water, which can be used for drinking or washing in.

Try to grow bushes and plants which offer an abundance of berries in Autumn. Pyracantha, for example, are a favourite amongst birds. The juicy red berries are an exceptional treat for small birds and insects, as they are full of vitamins.
