The Fruit Gardener's Diary - December
December is the time to stock take and to plan your garden for the forthcoming growing season. Wooden frames need to be mended and treated, and new fruit beds and paths between your crops can be laid.
December is the time to:
Things to do:
- Look over apples and pears in store and discard any that are too soft or are showing any signs of disease
- Grease band any fruit tree that was not done during November. Renew grease bands that have already trapped insects
- Start winter pruning of top fruit after leaf fall
- Protect under-developed fruits on fig trees by covering them with straw or a hessian sack
- Root-prune over vigorous fruit trees, especially fig trees
- Complete the planting of any fruit trees as soon as possible
