Step by step guide to growing your own radish
Prepare your site
Radish can be grown in any sort of soil as long as it is moist and reasonably fertile. Don't add manure to the soil as they don't like it. Radish are quite happy to grow in partial shade and can be planted between other slower growing crops as they are quick growers. |

When to plant radish
Summer radish seeds are best sown directly into the ground from early spring onwards, or as soon as the soil has started to warm up. Winter radish is best sown in mid to late summer. |

How to sow radish seeds
Sow radish seeds in small quantities every couple of weeks, this ensures that you have a constant supply of your favourite crunchy crop. Seeds should be sown either in rows or blocks at a depth of about half an inch. Cover lightly and water. |

Routine care of your radish crop
Radish need to be watered regularly, especially when it is hot and dry during the summer months. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, they need to be thinned out. Summer radish ideally need to be 1 inch apart, winter radish should be at least 6 inches apart. |

When to harvest radish
Summer radishes should be ready to pick one month after sowing. If you leave them in longer than necessary, they tend to become "woody" and they often get chewed by passing snails or slugs. Winter radish take longer to grow and can be left in the ground well into the Autumn months.
