Equipment required for easy Jam making
Preserving Pan
The preserving pan is the most important piece of equipment when it comes to making jam at home. The preserving pan can be made out of either copper or aluminium, but on the whole, an aluminium pan is the most useful, as both jams and chutneys can be made in it.
Glass Jam Jars
Save your old good quality glass jam jars and re-use them time and again. Small 4 to 8 ounce jars are ideal.
Jam Funnel
A jam funnel, or any plastic filling funnel is useful when pouring hot jam into clean jam jars. Using a jam funnel not only stops the jars from getting sticky, but it also avoids any possibility of scalding.
Large Wooden Spoons
Keep a set for the sole purpose of making jams and chutneys only. Strong flavours from curries etc will penetrate the wood and if used to stir your jam, may alter the taste.
Jam Covers
Wax paper discs are needed to cover the whole surface of the jam to form a sea, after it has been poured into the jars. Screw top lids may be used to seal the jar, or for an old-fashioned look, covers can be made from cellophane or parchment. A piece of gingham can be tied over the cellophane and tied with a piece of thin string or an elastic band. This is the process known as "Tying Down".
Labels
Jam pots and jars should always be labelled with the date of making.
Muslin
A piece of muslin is ideal for straining fruit, especially if you are making fruit jellies, seedless jam, or fruit butter.
Nylon Sieve
Ideal for making fruit purees.
Sugar Thermometer
To test the temperature of your jam whilst it is cooking. |
