The Fruit Gardener's Diary - January
There is not much to do in the fruit garden during January, it's just a case of simply tidying up fruit bushes, and inspecting any stored fruit.
January is the time to:
Indoors or in storage:
- Look over and inspect any apples or pears in store. Remove those which show any sign of disease or decay
Things to do:
- Complete any winter pruning of top fruit, making sure to remove all dead wood
- Remove all suckers from the base of all trees
- Lift crowns of rhubarb for forcing, place in a heated greehouse
- Tie in and prune peach trees which are growing under glass
