The Greenhouse Gardener's Diary - January
January is the time to sow tomato, onion and leek seeds in a heated greenhouse. Rhubarb can be forced and can be ready to eat within 4 weeks. It may be cold outside, but things are beginning to hot up in the greenhouse!

- Bring in any pot grown shrubs for forcing at a temperature of 10 °C
- Sew tuberous and fiborous Begonia tubers in a temperature of approximately 16 °C
- Take cuttings from chrysanthemums and place into a proporgating frame at a temperature of between 7 - 10°C
- Pack lifted rhubarb into boxes containing soil and place under the greenhouse staging. Cover completley with hessian sacks to block out all the light. Sticks should be ready for pulling in approximately 4 weeks if a temperature of 13 - 18°C has been maintained
- Sow onion, tomato, and leek seeds in boxes, exclude any light until they have germinated
- Sow antirrhinum, scarlet salvia and verbena seeds in boxes under glass and brown paper until germinated
- Sow sweet pea seeds, sow two or three seeds in a 3 inch pot
- Tie in and prune peach trees which are being grown under glass
