Vegetable Gardener's Diary - January
January is the chief month for planning and for ordering seeds and plants for the forthcoming growing season. Think about the vegetables that you grew last year. Were they a success? Did you eat them? Were they planted in the right position? Do you want to grow them again?
Once you have decided which vegetables to grow, start a gardening diary, listing which seeds were sown when, as this can be a great help in the future years.
January is the time to:
Prepare:

The ground by digging over and adding manure
- Warm soil by covering the ground with polythene sheets
Sow Indoors or in a heated greenhouse:
- Onion seeds
- Tomato seeds
- Leeks
Plant:
- First onion and shallot sets
Harvest:
- Cabbages
- Cauliflowers
- Brussels sprouts
- Kale
- Leeks
- Any remaining root vegetables and winter salad plants
Things to do:
- Buy seed potatoes and proceed to chit
- Buy onion sets and order seeds
