June offers plenty of sunshine and home grown strawberries are beginning to ripen.
June is the time to:
Plant:
Prune:
- Gooseberries
- Currant bushes
Harvest (when ripe):
- Rhubarb
- Raspberries
- Strawberries
Things to do:
- Tie in extending shoots on blackberries and loganberries
- Remove any flower spikes from rhubarb plants
- Remove any damaged branches from plum trees
- Protect strawberries from slugs and snails by placing a layer of straw beneath the fruits
- Mulch raspberry canes with well rotted compost or grass clippings when the soil is moist
- Space out and tie in any canes on wall mounted fruit trees and bushes
- Prune gooseberries and currant bushes by shortening sideshoots by one third
