The Greenhouse Gardener's Diary - June
June is the time to pot on cuttings that have been growing over the spring months, it also the time to take cuttings from the gardener's favourite plant, the beautiful fucshia. Seeds still need to be sown, and vines need to be trained.
June is the time to:
Sow:
- Primulas
- Calceolaris
- Cyclamen
- Cinerarias
Take cuttings from:
Pot On:
- Rooted cuttings of carnations
- And chrysanthemums
- Move pelargoniums into 6 inch pots
- Move winter flowering begonias into larger pots
Harden off :
- Pelargoniums towards the end of the month
Things to do:
- Open vents in the greenhouse, and leave open. If a cold night is forecast, close if necessary
- Dampen down the greenhouse during June. Potted Primula seedlings and young rooted cuttings will both benefit. Never dampen down during the daytime, do it either in the early morning, after dusk, or even both
- Water all growing pot plants daily, preferably in the morning. Do not water pot plants that are resting, especially nerines and lachenalias
- Fumigate your greenhouse If white fly appears
- Thin out fruits on greenhouse grapes, continu to train vines
- Train and feed cucumber and melon plants
