The Vegetable Gardener's Diary for early Summer in the UK

By now, the risk of frost has passed and your plants can now flourish in their growing positions.

June is the time to:

Prepare

- The ground for any remaining unsown vegetable seeds that you wish to grow

Sow

Courgettes
Pumpkins
Squash
Fennel
Any remaining salad seeds for a summer crop

Plant Out

Cucumbers
Sweetcorn
Any other seedlings raised during Spring
Any herbs grown from seed

Harvest

Peas
Broad beans
Spring onions
Early cabbages
Early cauliflowers
New potates
Onions
Carrots
Turnips
Beetroots
Garlic
Globe artichokes
Salad greens and vegetables

Things to do

- Keep the weeds down

- Water when necessary

- Net cabbages and other brassicas to deter birds and insects

- Feed asparagus plants with a general fertilizer after you have stopped picking spears. Leave in situ, and cut down in Autumn
