The Fruit Gardener's Diary - March
March weather can be unpredictable. It can be fine one day, and snowing the next. Late frosts may cause a problem, especially if you have planted out young strawberry plants for early cropping. Keep an eye on your local weather, and cover your fruit plants if necessary.
March is the time to:
- Give black currant's a lime sulphur spray
- Spray raspberries, loganberries and blackberries with spray containing captan, this will stop the spread of cane spot
- Take the last opportunity to plant soft fruit or young fruit trees
- Remove grease bands from fruit trees at the very end of the month
- If the season is mild, plant out young strawberry plants. Cover a few with cloches to encourage early flowering and fruiting
