March - The Vegetable Gardener's Diary

March is the time to:

Prepare

- Rake over your vegetable plot
- Harden off seedlings by moving them outside during the day only

Sow Indoors or in a heated greenhouse

  • Lettuce
  • Tomatoes
  • Aubergines
  • Sweet peppers
  • Chillies
  • Cucumbers
  • Celery
  • Celeriac
  • Fennel
  • Peas
  • Sweetcorn
  • Sweet potato (Yams)

Sow Outdoors undercover

  • Broad beans
  • Red cabbage
  • Summer cauliflower
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Sprouts
  • Onions
  • Leeks
  • Carrots
  • Turnips
  • Peas
  • Radish
  • Lettuce
  • Asparagus

Plant

  • First early seed potatoes, shallots, onions
  • Asparagus crowns and globe artichokes
  • Transplant early summer cauliflower seedlings

Harvest

  • Leeks
  • Broccoli
  • kale
  • Cauliflowers
  • Spinach
  • Swiss chard
  • Spring lettuce

Things to do:

- Hoe away any weeds

- Prune old growth away from any perennial herbs

- Divide chives

- Harden off cauliflowers, onions and leeks which were sown under glass in January, in preparation for planting out in early April

- Harden off any outdoor variety of tomato plants, ready for planting out in June

- Pot on any tomato seeds sown during January and February. Keep the plants growing at a steady rate, but not too fast
