Wash the unpeeled tomatoes and cut into ½ inch slices. Sprinkle the slices of tomato with salt and pepper and leave for 10 minutes or so.
As green tomatoes are quite tart, you could sprinkle a couple of tablespoons of brown sugar over them to make them a little sweeter.
Place the flour, milk, beaten egg and breadcrumbs into separate shallow dishes.
Heat 2 tbsp of olive oil in a pan, over a medium heat.
Dip tomato slices, one at a time, into the milk, then the flour, then the beaten egg and finally into the breadcrumbs, making sure that the slice of tomato is thoroughly covered.
Place half a dozen slices of prepared tomato into the pan and fry gently for 4 - 5 minutes each side. Tomatoes are ready to serve when they are golden brown on both sides.

Fry the remainder of the tomato slices, adding more olive oil to the frying pan if necessary.
Place fried green tomatoes on kitchen towel (to absorb excess fat) and serve.
