Growing The Right Plants For The Right Garden

The Greenhouse Gardener's Diary during September

The nights start to get colder during September, and now is the right time to clear out your greenhouse. Some plants need to be under cover at night, so vital space is needed in the greenhouse.

September is the time to:

Sow Seeds:

  • Schizanthus (Poor man's orchid)
  • Nemesia
  • Cornflowers
  • Godetia
  • Marigolds
  • Clarkia

Plant:

  • Lilies

Pot On:

  • Primulas
  • Calceolarias

Harvest:

  • Tomatoes

Things to do:

- Reduce the ventilation in your greenhouse, and keep an eye on the temperature

- Remove any shading from windows, except for the most shade loving plants

- Stop dampening down

- Clear any remaing tomato crop

- Clean out and disinfect the greenhouse before placing chrysanthemums overnight

- Continue to water and feed any Christmas flowering plants, such as Cyclamens

- Cut out old and any unwanted growths on greenhouse climbers
