September is generally recognised as being the start of Autumn in the UK. The weather may be drier than the summer months, and occassionaly early frosts may be recorded towards the end of the month.
September is the time to:
Sow Outdoors
- Winter lettuce
- Winter Spinach
- Turnips
Plant
Harvest
- Potatoes
- Maincrop carrots
- Marrows
Things to do in the veg garden during September
- Pull up tomato plants towards the end of the month and leave in a sheltered place while any remaining green tomatoes ripen, alternatively, cut the fruit off and ripen indoors
- Cut off the largest leaves on parsley plants sown in March, this encourages a good crop of younf leaves during the winter months
- Potatoes can be lifted and stored for later use by drying them out completely before laying them in a mound on a bed of straw. Cover with another thick layer of straw, finishing with a good layer of soil. Pack down and store in a well venitlated area
- Plant your spring cabbage plants 1ft apart, leaving 1½ ft between each row
- After harvesting marrows, clear the beds and place any waste material onto the compost heap
